Guide: Setting Up a Hikvision NVR or DVR for the First Time

Setting up your Hikvision NVR or DVR for the first time is crucial for ensuring a reliable and secure surveillance system. Follow these step-by-step instructions to configure your device and connect it to your cameras, network, and storage.

Step 1: Unbox and Connect the Hardware

  1. Check the Contents:

    • Ensure the package includes the NVR/DVR, power adapter, cables, and a mouse.
  2. Connect the Cables:

    • Cameras: Connect your cameras to the NVR/DVR via network cables (NVR) or coaxial cables (DVR). Please note if using POC (Power over Coax) power supplies are not needed for the cameras.
    • Monitor: Attach a monitor using the HDMI or VGA port.
    • Power Supply: Connect the NVR/DVR and cameras to power sources if needed.
    • Network: Plug the NVR/DVR into your router or switch using an Ethernet cable for network access.
  3. Power On:

    • Turn on the NVR/DVR and the connected cameras.

Step 2: Initial Device Setup

  1. Language Selection:

    • Select your preferred language when the startup wizard appears.
  2. Activate the Device:

    • Create a strong admin password (a combination of letters, numbers, and special characters).
    • Set and note down a password recovery method (email, security questions, etc.).
  3. System Configuration:

    • Set the time zone, date, and time format to ensure accurate recordings.
    • Enable Daylight Saving Time (DST) if applicable.

Step 3: Configure Storage (HDD Setup)

  1. Install a Hard Disk Drive (HDD):

    • Open the NVR/DVR casing and install a compatible HDD if not pre-installed.
    • Secure it with screws and connect the SATA and power cables.
  2. Format the HDD:

    • Navigate to Configuration > Storage > Storage Management.
    • Select the HDD and click Format to prepare it for recording.

Step 4: Add and Configure Cameras

  1. Auto-Detect Cameras (NVR):

    • Go to Configuration > Camera Management.
    • The system will automatically detect connected IP cameras on the same network.
    • Click Add for each detected camera.
  2. Manually Add Cameras (if required):

    • Enter the camera’s IP address, username, and password.
  3. Check Camera Feeds:

    • Verify live video feeds for all connected cameras in the Live View tab.

Step 5: Network Configuration

  1. Set Network Settings:

    • Navigate to Configuration > Network > General Settings.
    • Assign a static IP address to your NVR/DVR or enable DHCP to obtain an address automatically.
  2. Configure Remote Access:

    • Go to Platform Access and enable Hik-Connect.
    • Log in or create a Hik-Connect account and scan the QR code to link your device.

Step 6: Recording Setup

  1. Schedule Recording:

    • Navigate to Configuration > Recording > Schedule Settings.
    • Set the recording mode for each channel:
      • Continuous: Records non-stop.
      • Motion Detection: Records only when motion is detected.
      • Event Triggered: Records when alarms or specific events occur.
  2. Enable Motion Detection:

    • Go to Configuration > Event > Basic Event > Motion Detection.
    • Enable motion detection for desired channels and define sensitivity and detection areas.

Step 7: Enable Notifications

  1. Alarm Notifications:

    • Configure Notify Surveillance Center under Linkage Actions for motion or event triggers.
  2. Mobile Notifications:

    • Log into the Hik-Connect app, add your device, and enable notifications in Device Settings.

Step 8: Test the System

  1. Verify Live View:

    • Ensure all cameras are displaying live feeds properly.
  2. Playback Recordings:

    • Check recorded footage by navigating to the Playback tab.
  3. Trigger Events:

    • Test motion detection or other event triggers to verify alerts and notifications.

Step 9: Secure the System

  1. Update Firmware:

    • Go to Configuration > Maintenance > Upgrade and update to the latest firmware.
  2. Change Default Ports:

    • Modify default HTTP and RTSP ports under Configuration > Network > Advanced Settings to enhance security.
  3. Create User Accounts:

    • Set up additional user accounts with appropriate access levels under Configuration > User Management.

Troubleshooting Tips

  • No Camera Feed: Check cable connections, power supply, and camera compatibility.
